Buy Freshwater Pearls - Often Overlooked Beauties

buy fresh water pearls for sale online with pearl information and recommendations

Why buy freshwater pearls?  The term “freshwater pearl” is generally used to describe any pearl from a river, lake, stream or pond. Freshwater pearls are produced in mussels and tend to be significantly less expensive than their saltwater cousins.  Freshwater mussels produce up to 50 pearls, for comparison saltwater oysters produce a maximum of 3 or 4.  Most freshwater pearls are cultured and come in a variety of colors including white, gray, cream, yellow, pink and orange. Some fresh water pearls are black but black is not a natural color for freshwater pearls so assume any black freshwater pearl is dyed.  Only about 5% of freshwater pearls are round, the rest come in a variety of shapes including semi-round oval and Baroque. “Baroque” is a term used to describe irregular shaped pearls which can be quite desirable in the right string or setting.  Luster smoothness and shape all effect pearl prices. While there is not a universal standard for pearl grading pearls are often graded A, AA and AAA and sometimes A through D depending on the dealer. High grade (AAA) pearls feature a perfectly round shape with near perfect surfaces and a highly reflective luster.  AA pearls are very similar with about 90% of surfaces free of blemishes and a nearly round shape. Grade A pearls have a lower luster and 70% of the surface free of blemishes while not having a round shape.  Freshwater pearls are a great alternative for pearl lovers on a budget.  When buying fresh water pearls please consider our freshwater pearl necklace, bracelet and ring recommendations.
